FAU provides technological foundations for multimedia forensics

When it comes to solving crimes, even proven forensic experts reach their limits – for example, when the quality of video material from surveillance cameras near the crime scene is poor. A research project is intended to remedy this situation: Together with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the IT company Secunet, FAU will work over the next two years on a technological solution that makes it possible to identify license plates even on unclear recordings. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of its “Research for Civil Security” programme.

FAU is contributing its expertise in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and signal processing. Dr. Christian Riess from the Chair of Computer Science 1, IT Security Infrastructures, and Dr. Jürgen Seiler from the Chair of Multimedia Communication and Signal Processing, are in charge of the project.
